I facilitate Centering groups in Minneapolis, MN. We have recently integrated 2 crafts into group sessions. One is making fleece tie baby hats (lots of youtube videos on how to make this hat). The making of a hat requires only a piece of fleece material and a scissors, and are very cute! We are also making foot soaks out of lavender and baking soda and Epsom salt. The women mix the ingredients and put them in a cute bag and tie it with a ribbon. The women are instructed to use the foot soak at home while practicing deep breathing/relaxing. The crafts are completed during the first 30 minutes as women are completing health assessments. We have found that craft making assists in facilitating conversation and connections among women. Any other crafty centering sites out here? What are you doing?

Oh I hope Cynthia CE Wade sees this thread soon! Anne I love the foot soak idea, I may try this for myself : ) Last year for Christmas we got the clear Christmas globe balls and inserted ultrasound pics with tiny ornaments, tinsel, angel hair and shredded paper and other tiny items. We decorated outside with bows . We did this the last 15 minutes of session while we talked about their goals. The girls loved it. |

We are first time centering and just finished session 2. At session 2 we made rice socks. Very cheap to do. Tube socks from dollar store- 2 lb rice for each sock, lavender oil sprinkled in the rice sock and tied off with a non metal pony holder. Heat for 60 seconds in micro. The moms loved them- our visitors also made them.
We are planning on making bead bracelets near the 36 wk mark. Each mom has a different color bead. They each make a bracelet with one bead of each color. It is a reminder that these are moms just like them and they all need support, prayers or good thoughts. We are hoping they will bond enough to call each other when they go into labor for extra prayer, etc. |

We also did the bracelets at session 9. We gave each mom a cord for stringing the beads that they were given by other group members. Each group member gave a bead to each mom with a wish for mom and baby. Our moms loved them some were even teary eyed. Our support persons also did one if they liked or they just put a bead on the moms bracelets. At this session we also shared recipes to use for postpartum or to freeze before delivery . Many moms included short notes and their contact information on the recipe cards. Very touching session.

Aloha, Is everyone paying out of pocket for all these wonderful crafty ideas?? We do the beading activity and it is my absolute FAVORITE thing (all the providers make fun of me and how enthused I am about it  ). Gives patients something tangible to remind them of their time together. I like the idea of using crafts to encourage ice-breaking especially during the first three sessions which, for some groups, are uncomfortably awkward unless we facilitate. By session four we can often not get them to do anything else, as they are talking amongst themselves! Keep those ideas coming!!! Mahalo nui loa for all the support! |
