Leith attended Centering in Calgary Alberta and remains in touch with three of the five moms from her group. She also administers a post Centering Facebook group. Below is her story about the birth of her son Caelan. I just love how she decided to sing during labor!
What was it that made me so feel so prepared? So many things! My own involvement with my medical well being: checking weight, bp and urine. The absolutely amazing doctors who always took the time to make sure both baby and I were properly cared for. The pregnancy educators who made me feel like my silly questions weren't silly at all. The other moms who appreciated my questions, shared my fears, shared their own concerns and gave me a different perspective on pregnancy and parenting.
My experience with Centering Pregnancy was so very positive. I met several amazing doctors (Allison, Gaylene and Andrea), pregnancy educators (Liz and Lisa) and an amazing group of expectant mothers and eventually their beautiful babies.
While nothing could have completely prepared me for delivery and being a first time mother, I don't think I could have been any more prepared than I was by virtue of the CenteringPregnancy classes I attended. While I felt some small fear during delivery I also felt incredibly calm, joyful and excited. I was about to meet my son!
I don't remember when I got my hospital bracelets or when they moved me from triage to labor and delivery. But I remember the blessed epidural. Until then I hardly made a sound because as a trained opera singer I wasn't sure the entire ward wouldn't hear me! But in that moment of relief I sang. Yes, I was about 8cm dialated and completely naked but I sang. And you know what?! My son heard me and his heart rate went up! So amazing!
It was also a joy less than 48 hours after Caelan's birth to once again meet with my group from Centering Pregnancy. I shared my delivery story and the doctor gave a quick check up of my newborn. Of course I already knew he was perfect as only a new mother can.
