The Star Press 4:24 p.m. EDT March 27, 2016 MUNCIE — Open Door Health Services will begin offering a new program for expectant mothers in May, with training and operational support funded by a recent grant from The March of Dimes, Indiana Chapter. The CenteringPregnancy program is an evidence-based model of care that improves birth outcomes, by promoting greater patient engagement, personal empowerment and community-building, according to a release. “These funds will be used to provide training in the CenteringPregnancy curriculum to the providers and support staff who work with our prenatal patients on a daily basis,” Toni Estep, CEO of Open Door Health Services, said in the release. “We are so grateful to the March of Dimes volunteers who make grants like this possible through participation in walks or donations. We see the impact that it makes on our patients daily.” CenteringPregnancy offers group discussions and interactive activities on such topics as nutrition, stress management, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, and infant care with mothers and support people, according to the Centering Healthcare Institute website. It also provides longer individual prenatal visits of 90 minutes to an hour, giving women more time with their care provider. "Moms engage in their care by taking their own weight and blood pressure and recording their own health data with private time with their provider for belly check," the website states. Open Door is always accepting new prenatal patients. For more information about Open Door Health Services’ prenatal program, go to opendoorhs.org or call (765) 286-7000.
