This is a summary of the ideas shared at the recent consortium meeting apart from a review of the new facilitators guide and leader kit.
• Safe sleep activity: set up a crib with baby doll facing down, extra bedding- essentially with everything set up wrong- have the mom’s fix it and discuss.
• Ornaments:
--Get clear fillable ornaments from the dollar store, spray the inside with hairspray and shake glitter into it, have mom’s decorate them with baby’s name
--Get glass ornaments that are large enough to hold some Easter grass, baby’s first hat, baby bracelet, and the centering group yarn. As mentioned the yarn would go inside- but might also use the yarn to hang the ornament.
• Make labor bracelets with color beads representing different strengths; can also put baby name on them
• Smoothie making demo at the nutrition session
• Pipe cleaners as fidgets for session one and two; described as helpful when the group doesn’t know each other yet. Another member mentioned use of pipe cleaners to bend into figures and demonstrate different positions for labor
• One site has a staff member who also is a photographer. They stage seasonal themed baby pictures and give them to the patients; part of their marketing strategy as well
• Cut a pool noodle into small sections for use as back support/ massage rollers on chairs in group
• Have partner put on a t-shirt on so that their legs go into the arms of the shirt, and then have them move around to deliver a teddy bear through the head opening.
• Set up a stroller and car seat safety check station (set it up to that patient’s verify correct setup; ex. put something small in baby doll’s hand to represent possible choke hazard)
• Take pictures at each session, scrapbook 1 page for every group and keep the album in the room. Share pictures with the group through google photos
• At session 4, have the patient’s write a letter to themselves about how they are feeling, and put in self- addressed envelope. Add to this a group photo at the reunion and mail to them 1 year from the reunion (they track for demise/loss to avoid sending inappropriately; no issues with this reported as this site is in a small community)
• Fitdeck prenatal cards (https://fitdeck.com/product/FitDeck-Prenatal)- pass out cards to everyone in the group and ask them to each lead the group in the stretching activity pictured.
