November is #prematurityawarenessmonth. We know the state of maternal and infant health in the United States is in a crisis. The United States ranks 33rd out of 36 in infant mortality, compared to other developed countries. 10% of U.S. babies were born preterm in 2018, increasing for the fourth year in a row and preterm birth among Black women is 49% higher than the rate among all other women. With a mission to improve health, transform care and disrupt inequitable systems through the Centering model of group care, we at CHI are committed to better health outcomes for pregnant women, infants and families. As evidence shows, Centering groups demonstrate a: • 7.1% preterm birth rate compared to the national average of 10% • 36% reduction in risk of preterm birth • 28% reduction in risk of NICU stay • 44% reduction in risk of low birth weight Research has shown that Black women experience lower risk of preterm birth when enrolled in CenteringPregnancy. Centering is also known to elevate lived experience alongside clinical care, support healthy parent-child interactions and increase parental behaviors that lead to positive life outcomes for children. We are grateful for your crucial role and partnership in helping us fulfill our mission and save the lives of all moms and infants. Look out for additional information this week on resources to build awareness for the cause. Join us in elevating the conversation.
