I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post my question. If not please let me know. We are losing a RN facilitator in the next couple weeks. We need to find another facilitator from our group of clinical staff. When we choose this person, is it a requirement that they do facilitation training or can they work with the midwife that is with that particular group? We didn't expect this to happen so soon after starting groups, but it has!

Hi Patricia,
Sorry to hear you will be losing one of your Centering facilitators! Basic Facilitation training is a requirement for all Centering facilitators but we realize it is not always possible for new staff to get to a workshop right away. In the meantime, do have your midwife orient the new person using the Facilitator's Guide and any other facilitation tools you have. The Facilitator Process Evaluation form will be key in reviewing how group sessions go, and the Essential Elements evaluation will be useful in helping your new facilitator understand the process and philosophy. Let Molly or me know if we can help!
Perhaps some others will chime in with good orientation tips for new staff awaiting formal training...

It looks like we will be sending someone to the training session in Lansing for October. The RN that is being considered has an appointment on the 2nd day of training that cannot be moved. She would be able to come to training but would be late. Sounds like she would be to training by 11am. Would this be a problem or should someone else be considered for training?

Hi Patti,
We know having people for two full days can be challenging, but it really is important to attend all of training. The first couple of hours on day two include group educational content and facilitation concepts and then time for facilitation practice. In the evaluations we receive for the training, people always say the facilitation practice is most valuable, so this would be a particularly hard one to miss. I would recommend identifying a different staff member for this round of training, and hopefully send your RN in the future.

Since one of our facilitators/clinical staff has left us, we are sending a couple more staff members for training. In the meantime we have started our fourth group. The 2 staff that are being trained will be ready by the 3rd session of this group. I know consistency is huge in Centering, but would it be unheard of to have one of the two newly trained staff take over that group for the facilitator/clinical staff?

That would be fine, and it is not all that unusual. One of the Essential Elements calls for groups to be stable but not rigid. Stability promotes group interaction and social bonding but we don't want to be so rigid as to make it impossible to convene and manage groups effectively.

Changing the facilitators is not optimal as it can disturb the trust that is developing, and often we find that the Moms if not already bonded will drop out when a new facilitator takes over. The bonding usually occurs by session 3 or 4.We used to ask that the provider and facilitator to avoid (if at all possible) being out or changing before session 4. That being said, given your situation, I would talk to the group, and explain the situation and try to engage them to welcome the new facilitator.
